1969 Mercedes 300 SEL 6.3 | SOLD

Back in 1968, Mercedes built its first muscle car by simply taking its largest engine and putting it in the smallest car that could reasonably handle it and only 6500 units were built.

What was once the world’s fastest sedan is still regarded as quick by today’s standards. In an old Road & Track article, writers and staff took the 6.3 to a drag strip and commenced beating various hot rods and muscle cars. If speed and power related clout doesn’t kick you into top gear, remember that icons like Steve McQueen and Paul Newman have owned 6.3’s. For many, the idea of owning the Red Pig 6.3 is the pinnacle but we can’t help imagine that air conditioning and plush seats will hurt the experience. If you've never been behind the wheel of a W109 you're certainly in for a treat. The quality behind each car built can be felt today and it doesn't get much better than a fully sorted example such as this. Just turn the key and go.

This 1969 Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.3 is a superb example of a sought-after classic performance saloon. The world's fastest four-door car at the time of its launch, the 300 SEL arguably set the template for every high-performance saloon since. It is powered by a 6.3-litre M100 V8 engine with Bosch fuel injection, producing some 247bhp and 369 lb ft of torque, driven through the rear wheels via a four-speed automatic transmission.

What began as a secret ‘skunkworks’ project by chassis engineer Erich Waxenberger was soon signed off for production by development chief Rudolf Uhlenhaut, and the 300 SEL 6.3 became a legend as soon as it was launched. Even on the other side of the Atlantic, Road & Track magazine called it “the best sedan in the world”. Tested by the German automotive media in period, the car was clocked from 0-60mph in less than 6.5 seconds and with a top speed of 137mph. Self-levelling air suspension and ventilated disc brakes were standard.
