THE E TYPE LEGACY
Enzo Ferrari called it “the most beautiful car ever made” — and we're inclined to agree. Just take a look at this 1961 Jaguar E-Type. Its long sweeping bonnet and small, simple grille afford the car one of the most iconic silhouettes in the motoring world; a design every gentleman should recognise instantly.
When the Jaguar E-Type debuted at the 1961 Geneva Motor Show, it redefined automotive design and performance, earning effusive praise as a "racer for the road" that masterfully blended grace, space, and pace. Born from the D-Type’s Le Mans-winning DNA, this icon combined sensuous curves with cutting-edge engineering: a 265-horsepower 3.8-liter XK inline-six, monocoque construction, four-wheel disc brakes, and independent rear suspension. Its legacy as one of the most desirable sports cars of the 20th century remains unchallenged, celebrated by enthusiasts and collectors alike.
THIS MOTOR CAR
This exceptional 1961 Jaguar E-Type Roadster represents the most coveted iteration of the model: an early Series I "Flat Floor" & "Welded Louvers Bonnet" example, distinguished by its covered headlamps, low-slung stance, and unadorned cabin floors—features phased out by 1962. According to its Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate, this matching number, right-hand-drive example left the factory in October 1961 clad in Opalescent Gunmetal over a Black leather interior, equipped with a French Grey soft top, and dispatched directly to Gilman & Co. of Hong Kong.
The current registration document in Hong Kong dates back to 1980, showing the car has transition through five owners before entering the current custodian’s care in 2015. While its mid-century history remains shrouded in mystery, its provenance as an original Hong Kong-delivered E-Type—coupled with a comprehensive, well-documented restoration, the car drives beautifully, both on highways and Hong Kong’s signature winding roads —cements its status as a marquee collector’s prize.
