The "classic" Mini, designed by Alec Issigonis and produced by the British Motor Company (BMC) and Rover from 1959 to 2000, is a renowned British car. Conceived during austerity, it was commissioned by Sir Leonard Lord to be a small, fuel-efficient car that could carry four adults and remain affordable. The design challenge required it to fit within a 10ft x 4ft x 4ft box. Despite minor modifications, the Mini stayed true to Issigonis's concept. Its space-saving transverse engine and front-wheel drive allowed 80% of the floor area to be used for passengers and luggage, influencing future car designs.

The special edition Mini Paul Smith LE was released in 1998 in a limited edition of 1800 units. All UK Minis were available in this striking Paul Smith blue hue, a colour specially selected by the renowned fashion designer, over a black leather interior. Each car was built to a distinctive and instantly recognisable specification, to include charcoal grey 12” Minilite alloy wheels, twin spot lamps, 24ct gold enamelled “Paul Smith” bonnet badge, “Paul Smith” rear window sticker, full black leather trim, colour-coded dash with Paul Smith scripted instrument graphics and a citrus green glovebox interior, petrol tank and boot liner. As the most lavish Rover Mini ever produced up to that point, it also wore a premium price tag.
