The Rolls-Royce Corniche is a front-engine, rear wheel drive five-seater produced by Rolls-Royce Motors as a coupé and convertible from 1971 to 1995. It acted as a development of the 1965 Silver Shadow, being produced with two doors instead of four. The Corniche draws its name from the French and Italian term for a corniche, a coastal road, especially along the face of a cliff, most notably the Grande Corniche along the French Riviera above the principality of Monaco.
The Corniche was designed by in-house stylist John Blatchley and hand built by coachbuilder Mulliner Park Ward in Willesden, North London. Each Corniche took four months to build, with two weeks alone being spent creating the convertible roof. As a result, it is considered by many as the last of the true ‘coach built cars’.
Underneath the redesigned skin, the Corniche shared many mechanical components with its four-door sibling, the Silver Shadow. This included the same 6.75 litre Rolls-Royce V8 engine that powered the Corniche from 0-60mph in under 10 seconds through a three-speed automatic transmission. It also featured the cutting edge hydraulic self-levelling suspension of the Shadow to give it the iconic Rolls-Royce ride comfort.
The Mulliner Park Ward design is as fresh today as it was when introduced. Consuming four months to build, two weeks alone were spent just creating the convertible top, each Corniche was hand finished from the very start, it is considered by many as the last of the true ‘coach built cars’
