This 280 SL is a beautiful example of Mercedes’ iconic and stylish two-seater convertible in suitably period ‘Light ivory’. It was delivered new in March 1985 through Zung Fu Mercedes-Benz in Hong Kong. It was specified in white with Black Leather interior. Optional extras included a factory hardtop in matching white and air-condition.
The SL was a highly desirable car when it was new as it was the only Mercedes-Benz roadster available during its entire production and the economic boom of the late 1980’s meant that demand far outweighed supply, leading to premiums being paid for these cars. As a result, many SL’s changed hands a number of times in their lives and this car was no exception.
Today the car has 14 owners in its 34 year lifetime and covered 80,763 miles. The car has been looked after and most notably the previous owner, a big Mercedes collector chose this car because of the original “First Paint” and the beautifully preserved cabin with none of the usual areas affected by hard use or neglect; the integrity of the seat bottoms are superb. The door panel vinyl coverings are free of wrinkles or shrinkage and fit as they should. The wooden inlays display a smooth lacquer, indicating a delicate use of switchgear whilst the rear bench looks exceptionally clean. Mechanically, the car was subject to an overhaul at his trusted workshop where all the fluids were drained and flushed, a new radiator, battery installed, brand new tyres fitted all round and the wheels refurbished.
A brief test drive of the car proves the excellent mechanical health and lifting the bonnet reveals a clean engine bay. The engine generates plenty of torque with that familiar silky smooth inline six and performs flawlessly whether at cruise or around town. The transmission performs without hesitation and shifts confidently through the gears.
This is a truly beautiful example of Mercedes’ iconic and stylish two-seater convertible in a period colour. The car is in fantastic driving condition, with no rust or corrosion in the problem areas. The soft top presents neatly while a colour-coded hard top, allows enjoyable all-year driving.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY:
The SL model has been part of the Mercedes-Benz line-up since 1954. The first generation of cars was completed in 1955 with the 190. The second generation began with the 230 in 1963 and was distinguished by its distinctive optional hardtop that earned the model its nickname ‘Pagoda top’. The factory codename for the SL launched in 1971 was R107. The Mercedes-Benz R107 and C107 were produced from 1971 through 1989, being the second longest single series ever produced by the automaker, after the G-Class. They were sold under the SL (R107) and SLC (C107) model names as the 280 SL, 280 SLC, 300 SL, etc. up to the 560 SL.
This model enjoyed an impressive build run until 1989 and over its eighteen year reign, the R107/C107 range was powered by no less than eight different engines, two sizes of straight-six unit and six versions of V8’s. Late in 1985, the 280 version was succeeded by the 300SL of which 13,742 were produced. Also in 1985, the Bosch KE Jetronic was fitted. The KE Jetronic system varied from the earlier, all mechanical system by the introduction of a more modern engine management "computer", which controlled idle speed, fuel rate, and air/fuel mixture. The final car of the 18 years running 107 series was a 500 SL painted Signal red, built on August 4, 1989; it currently resides in the Mercedes-Benz museum in Stuttgart, Germany.
