Ferrari 550 Maranello | N/A

The Ferrari 550 Maranello was conceived to be a classic from the start. Like the cars that made Ferrari famous in the 50s and 60s, the 550 Maranello is a GT meant for high-speed, cross-country travel, with all of the essential Ferrari pieces present and accounted for. After some 20 years absence from producing front-engined V12 Grand Tourers, Lorenzo Ramaciotti from Pininfarina created something classic from the Ferrari design vocabulary and once again evoked the love Front-Engined V12 GT cars. Just as Ferrari intended nearly 20 years ago, the 550 Maranello combines heritage, classic style, and modern drivability in a package that has enduring appeal. These are the things that make any car a collectible classic. Now at 20 years old, the Ferrari 550 is becoming more and more sought-after today. And rightly, it is now truly regarded as a Pininfarina classic.

Beyond the classic cues is an ultra-modern car, one with a sleek body that has a super-low 0.33 drag coefficient and underbody trickery that reduces aerodynamic lift. The tubular space frame is rigid, the suspension features electronically adjustable dampers, and the engine has lightweight titanium connecting rods. Then as now, the secret to this car’s appeal is its drivability. The cockpit is particularly spacious compared to Ferrari’s mid-engine cars, and two people can travel in chic comfort. The suspension is notably compliant, and the ride is completely modern even though you’re sitting nearly on top of the rear suspension. Despite its short 98.4-inch wheelbase, the car has terrific straight-line stability complemented by very direct speed-sensitive, hydraulically assisted steering.

Not many classic Ferraris can give you the modern drivability and reliability that the Ferrari 550 Maranello delivers. When new, this car was very reliable as Ferraris go, and it still promises to spend more time on the road than in the shop. Fortunately the V-12 does not need to be removed for service, The value rests not only on its collectible status and also on the goodness of the driving experience it offers, which is what you want in a car that’s meant to be more than a garage queen. The subtleness of the design make this 550 a useable GT without drawing too much attention when out on the road and there is no doubt that this GT will remain one of the last greats of analogue driving pleasure.

Firmly placed in Ferrari's history as one of their finest modern-era big GTs, the 550 Maranello's combination of elegant lines and legendary front-mounted 12-cylinder engine, and are quickly becoming a modern classic. Following in the footsteps and sharing the DNA of the 365 GTB/4 'Daytona', the 550 Maranello is inevitability compared to its forbear. Few front-engined Ferraris have quite justified that comparison quite like the 550 Maranello. Styled by Pininfarina, like its illustrious predecessor, the 550 Maranello was similarly proportioned, adopting the classical combination of long bonnet, small cabin and a truncated tail. Classic Ferrari styling cues include a bonnet air scoop and hot air outlets behind the front wheel-arches recalling the great Competizione Ferraris of the past, whilst the rear incorporates Ferrari's characteristic twin circular lights.

The 550 Maranello was presented to the world at a grand launch event at Germany’s famous Nurburgring race, where Michael Schumacher and Eddie Irvine could test the new car on track. Ferrari’s 550 Maranello is a wonderful GT car. The 5.5-litre V12 first used in the 456 GT was revised by Ferrari’s engineers to produce 485 horsepower in the 550 Maranello, mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. Its performance remains staggering even in today's standard: 0-62mph in 4.4 seconds, and a top speed of 199mph. Four-wheel independent suspension affords impressive ride comfort, while plentiful luggage space and a large 114-litre fuel tank make it a practical choice for daily journeys. Scaglietti built the all-aluminum bodywork. The rear-mounted transaxle helps balance out this 3,726-pound car, and the six-speed manual features a classic gated shifter with a polished metal lever and knob.

The six-speed manual gearbox complements a slightly more even torque curve ensuring that the power delivery was a little less frenetic, whilst excellent weight distribution and delightful road manners make the 550 Maranello a truly refined driving machine, whilst still capable of almost 200 mph. With styling that is ageing particularly well, a high-quality cabin, generous storage and an enormous 100-litre-plus fuel tank, the 550 Maranello really is the consummate 'Grand Tourer' in the true Ferrari mould.

In 2004, EVO magazine published a 'Greatest Driver's Cars' feature that set the 550 Maranello against the Porsche 911 GT3, Honda NSX-R and Pagani Zonda C12S. The Ferrari won. EVO stated “As with all great cars, there's no one facet that dominates the experience. Yes, the engine is mighty, but the chassis is its equal. There's never been a supercar that's so exploitable and so rounded in its capabilities.”
