1989 Ferrari 328 GTS Classiche Certified | POA

Debuted at the 1985 Frankfurt Auto Show, the Ferrari 328 was the second model in Ferrari’s long and popular line of mid-engine V8 sports cars, continuing through the upcoming 488 GTB. The 328 was the replacement to the popular 308 and featured notable performance and design advancements over the outgoing model. The mid-mounted V8 engine was increased from 3.0 to 3.2 liters and the iconic Leonardo Fioravanti designed body was updated for a smoother, more contemporary appearance with integrated bumpers and revised cooling ducts, resulting in a more cohesive and streamlined profile.

Pininfarina built two variants of this mid-engine sportscar, the Gran Turismo Berlinetta Coupe and the Gran Turismo Spider, featuring a removable Targa top. While performance of the GTS was not the same as the GTB, it offered an exhilarating open-air driving experience, and afforded the driver and their fortunate passenger unbridled access to the unmistakable sound of the dry-sump Ferrari V8. In the short four year run of the 328, 6,068 examples were produced, a great success which, combined with the success and popularity of the 308, ensured the position of the mid-engine V8 in Ferrari’s permanent stable.

The Ferrari 328 GTS presented here is a late-production example featuring ABS Brakes and new wheel design allowing enhanced braking performance and surely amongst the lowest-mileage 328s in existence. It presents in fantastic condition throughout, with its Rosso Corsa (FER300) paintwork gleaming and beautifully offset by a Crema (VM3997) interior with Rosso carpets. Built to RHD specifications, it was shipped from Maranello to Glen Henderson of Edinburgh via Maranello Concessionaires and first delivered on Jan 5th 1990.

The car comes with a fully documented history, the 328 GTS remained in the UK until 2015 and subsequently came to Hong Kong. Very low mileage, all original and never restored, it remains finished in its original colours and matching number engine and transmission, as confirmed by the accompanying Ferrari Classiche Certification Red Book. Its last annual service was carried out in 2020 by Blackbird Concessionaires of Hong Kong, and it has been driven less than 100 miles since.

This is likely to be one of the finest 328 GTS models in existence, worthy of the attention of even the most discerning collector and it is clear to see that the original condition of this car is almost impossible to replicate and reflects it’s obviously pampered life and no expense spared provenance

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY:

MODEL HISTORY

The 328 GTS model, together with the 328 GTB with fixed roof, represented the final development of the two-seater series with transverse aspirated V8 engine. The number 328 in the model abbreviation referred to the total displacement of the engine unit, 3.2 liters, while the eight represented the number of cylinders.

In essence, the 328 was a revised and updated version of the 308, which survived for nearly a decade without radical body changes. The 328 model features a softening of the wedge shape typical of the outgoing car, with a redesigned nose with a more rounded shape, which was counterbalanced by the vehicle's tail panel.

The interior was completely revisited with new design, new modern door panels with opening handles, more control switches. Everything was accompanied by an evident aesthetic restyling of the whole car. Air conditioning, metallic paint, dashboard and interior fittings in leather were available.

The displacement was increased to 3185 cc with the internal processing reference number F 105

The drive unit retains the Bosch K-Jetronic starting system, but equipped with electronic Marelli ignition. The declared power reached 270 horsepower at 7,000 rpm.As in the previous 308 models, the engine was mounted transversely as a block with the five-speed transmission, located at the bottom behind the engine oil pan.

The 328 GTS remained in production for four years, until in the fall of 1989, it was replaced by the 348
