Ferrari 308 GTS Carburetor | $900K HKD

The Ferrari 308 GTS Carburetor is a fantastic open-top sports car, and is sure to put a huge smile on your face each time you get behind the wheel and open up that throttle.

This particular car is a 1980 Carburetors Open top Targa version. Originally delivered in Hong Kong to a well-known local department store family. It is presented in Rosso Corsa body colour with nice Patina over Crema color hide with black carpets, and has a factory specification air conditioning. It was kept for well over 10 years before it was sold to the owner's friend, who initiated a full bare-metal restoration and mechanical refresh in the 90s. The result was astonishing and the car was proudly featured on the cover of Automobile Magazine. When the first owner saw the fully refreshed car, he must buy it back and therefore, this beauty was returned "home" for another decade.

The car was sold again in 2015 to a vintage enthusiast. Since then, the car has been sparingly driven but well maintained. Since the last restoration was done with extreme high standards 20 years ago, the paint and interior are still very nice. The car now has a period correct vintage feel to it.

The Ferrari 308 GTB was the successor to the Dino 308 GT4. Indeed, when the new Ferrari was first spotted testing in Italy, the ‘Prancing Horse’ magazine in the US called the 308 GTB ‘a very new Dino’.

While the production car was Ferrari-badged from day one, it shared many of the Dino’s star qualities. The engine, driveline, suspension, steering and brakes are shared with the 308 GT4, but to style the car, Ferrari returned to Pininfarina rather than work with Bertone again. The svelte lines penned by Leonardo Fioravanti at Pininfarina remain as stunning today as they were when first revealed in 1975.

In 1977, the Ferrari 308 GTS was introduced, which featured the added benefit of a black targa roof panel that could be easily removed and stowed in the cabin behind the seats. This particular Ferrari 308 GTS is an original right-hand-drive example, first registered in the HK in November 1980. It is presented in original Rosso Corsa over original Crema hide with black carpets, and still has its original and correct shallow front spoiler. An updated bullet style rear view mirror was installed to replace the original unit which was kept intact and will be supplied with the sale. The beautiful interior has outstanding patina with the all-original leather trim and original cassette radio. The car sits on 16 inch Ferrari wheels. Odometer shows 11,532 Miles but we were told it has stopped working a few years ago so the mileage is not accurate, but estimated to be around 15,000 miles

Background History

The Ferrari 308 GTB Berlinetta and targa topped 308 GTS are V8 mid-engined, 2-seater sports cars manufactured by Ferrari from 1975 to 1985. The 308 replaced the Dino 246 GT and GTS in 1975 and was updated as the 328 in 1985.

The 308 had a tube frame with separate body. The 308 GTB/GTS and GT4 were mechanically similar, and also shared much with the original Dino. Both 308s sit on the same tube platform, however the GT4—being a 2+2—has a longer wheelbase. The engine was a V8 of a 90 degree configuration, with belt-driven twin overhead camshafts per cylinder bank. It was transversely mounted in unit with the transaxle transmission assembly, which was below and to the rear of the engine's sump. All models used a fully synchromesh 5-speed manual and a clutch-type limited slip differential. Suspension was all-independent, comprising double wishbones, coaxial coil springs and hydraulic dampers, and anti-roll bars on both axles; four wheel vented disc brakes were also fitted. Steering was unassisted rack and pinion.

The 308's body was designed by Pininfarina's Leonardo Fioravanti, who had been responsible for some of Ferrari's most celebrated shapes to date such as the Daytona, the Dino and the Berlinetta Boxer. The 308 used elements of these shapes to create something very much in contrast with the angular GT4. GTS models featured a removable roof panel with grained satin black finish, which could be stowed in a vinyl cover behind the seats when not in use.
